This past season’s American Idol winner and runner-up will be probably be more than grateful to get this Thanksgiving holiday over with. Both singers Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina had embarrassing musical meltdowns on Thanksgiving while making appearances. McCreery forgot to lip sync as his song played in Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and Alaina fumbled through the national anthem at the Packers and Lions Thanksgiving Day game.
Alaina started out strong while performing the national anthem for a packed crowd at Ford Field in Detroit. About 16 seconds into the song, she seemed to draw a blank and stopped singing. After several seconds of silence, she resumed singing. The pause occurred while singing the lines “twilight’s last gleaming.” She finished the rest of the song without error. Alaina later addressed the flub on her Twitter account by saying she was thankful for all of the kind words and admitted she messed up. She planned to spend the rest of the day counting her blessings.
McCreery was riding in on a float as part of the nationally televised Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and was cued to begin his hit song “The Trouble With Girls.” However, as the cameras zoomed in on the country singer, it was obvious he was not lip syncing and his microphone was held at his side. The song played on until McCreery finally realized he was supposed to jump in. Although musical acts do not sing live during the parade due to weather conditions, most make the effort to at least pretend to sing.
Although the musical stars were embarrassed by the flubs, it is not likely to hurt their careers. Lip syncing and lyric mangling scandals happen to many high profile pop stars. The teen American Idol stars both have plans to continue recording new music and promoting their debut albums.
