Movies in theaters this weekend of May 4, 2012 are The Avengers, Mother’s Day and The Five-Year Engagement.
The Avengers
The ultimate team-up of superheroes – Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Incredible Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine and Nick Fury. Marvel’s Avengers have been assembled to protect the world from the evils perpetrated by Thor’s evil half-brother Loki, to save us all.
Finally, we have the SLAM BAM THANK YOU MA’AM superhero movie that we’ve been waiting for all these years. We have an over-the-top psycho action film, with great actors – each of whom could support a film by themselves, a director/writer known for his skills with big ensembles and working in genre pieces (Joss Whedon of Buffy fame) and a sensibility that this will be the most explosive thing that we’ll see all summer, all year even!
It’s everything that we want in a superhero movie: FUN! It’s the most SUPERHERO movie ever made!
Mother’s Day
Thankfully, the director of Saw 2, 3 and 4 got to this holiday themed movie before Garry Marshall got to it and made a huge ensemble Mother’s Day movie where everyone falls in love, I just couldn’t take it anymore!!! Mother’s Day is a crazed horror story starring Rebecca De Mornay which is a remake of the Troma horror classic Mother’s Day.
After a heist gone bad, three bank robbers return home to hideout at their mother’s place, only to find out that she had lost the house in a foreclosure. They hold the new owners and their guests hostage. And then their sadistic, dangerous mother comes home to take control of the situation and things only get bloodier.
It’s a trashy gore-fest and Rebecca De Mornay is chilling in the lead performance as “mother”, she’ll scare the life out of you she’s so good. It’s not fine art, but if you like this sort of thing, you’ll find a lot to love in it.
The Five-Year Engagement
A quirky romantic comedy from the same people who brought you Bridesmaids, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin and starring Jason Segel (who co-wrote it) and Emily Blunt. Just from the talent involved, you know it has to be good!
What happens when a couple in love gets engaged, and the day that they’re building towards.. gets further and further away. It’s both a wacky comedy and a sweet love story at the same time. The ultimate date movie!
