Movies opening up this week are: Snow White & The Huntsman and Piranha 3DD.
A re-imagining of the classic fairy-tale, but done in a much more epic Game of Thrones kind of way.
We’ve all heard or seen the classic story, it’s in this movie, but there are twists along the way. The evil Queen Ravena, played with evil delight by Charlize Theron, rules the land. She’s all but convinced that she’s the fairest of them all. Appreciating her beauty in her magic mirror, she is maddened to find out that not only is her stepdaughter Snow White (played by Twilight’s Kristen Stewart) fairer than her, but she threatens to end her reign as Queen. The only way that the Queen can continue her rule as fairest of them all and live forever as ruler, is to consume Snow White’s heart. To reach this end, she dispatches a Huntsman (played by Thor’s Chris Hemsworth) to dispatch of her. Upon meeting her, the Huntsman takes pity on her and trains her in the art of war. She bands together with a band of warrior elves and her love the Prince, to fight back against the Evil Queen and start a revolution.
It’s a very grim take on Snow White, more Grimm’s fairy tales than the classic Disney cartoon. It’s an entertaining and a rollicking adventure that you’ll no doubt enjoy. Kristen Stewart shows some promise that she’s moving beyond the Twilight movies and Charlize Theron proves yet again, that she’s more than a pretty face, she steals the show. It’s Snow White done as a Girl Power film. There’s a lot for everybody to enjoy in this movie.
Those swimming carnivores that tore apart the beach in the first Piranha remake are still hungry and back for seconds! This time it’s in a scandalous waterpark where David Hasslehoff is the celebrity lifeguard. Back for more are Christopher Lloyd and Ving Rhames, whose character has seen better days. The T&A is upped, as is how insanely ridiculous this movie is.
Should you see it?
If you loved the first movie, no doubt that you’ll love this too. It’s definitely not fine art, but if you dig mindless trashy comedies, you’ll enjoy yourself.
