2012 Teen Choice AwardsYoung stars know that teens make up a big part of their core audience and that this fickle age group can also determine who will be the next big thing in the entertainment field or who will be “so yesterday.” So that is probably why most smart entertainers attend the annual Teen Choice Awards — to be seen and to show their appreciation to their most important fans.

This year’s event, which was held in The Gibson Theatre in Universal City, California on Sunday, was hosted by 19-year-old Demi Lovato, who is also the newest “The X Factor” judge. Her co-host was Kevin McHale from “Glee.”

Fan favorite Justin Bieber, who performed his song, “Boyfriend,” won five Teen Choice Awards surfboards, including choice male artist and choice male music star of the summer. The teen singer also took home the choice male fashion icon surfboard. Bieber has now won a total of 12 choice awards in his career.

Other big winners of the night included Taylor Swift, who won five awards, including choice female artist and choice female country artist. The beautiful country singer has now won a total of 20 choice awards, which is the most that any female artist has won so far.

A number of artists appeared during this, the 14th-annual ceremony, which was aired live on Fox. The opening act featured a high-energy crumping, hip-hop flavored performance by the cast of the movie, “Step Up Revolution.” Musical acts included such popular artists as No Doubt and, of course, the singer of the viral hit of the year, “Call Me Maybe,” Carly Rae Jepsen.

A number of popular actors also either won Teen Choice Awards or presented, including the stars of the Twilight series, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart. The popular series has now won over 41 Teen Choice Awards. With another “Twilight” movie set to hit the big screens soon, that number will surely go up.

Whitney Houston SparkleFans of the late great Whitney Houston only have to wait another few weeks to see her perform again. She’ll light up the big screen in August in Sparkle. Whitney had taken a long hiatus from acting since the nineties, choosing instead to focus on music and her family. Her last roles in The Preacher’s Wife, Waiting to Exhale, and The Bodyguard, met critical acclaim, so we can expect great things from Sparkle as she only improved with age. In different circumstances, this could have been the beginning of a comeback for the legend. The film’s message, of a talented singer overcoming a drug issue, is particularly poignant, but ultimately uplifting.

Sparkle lives up to its name with a star-studded cast, including young talent Jordin Sparks. The twenty-two year old singer lost fifty pounds recently, and flaunts her new body both in the film and in a bikini on a recent cover of Shape. Rumor is that this total makeover (fueled by Zumba and hiking) may have led to the American Idol sweetheart being offered the title role in the musical. She’s taken on much of the publicity work in the wake of Whitney’s death, and referred to the movie as Houston’s “baby.” Ironically, the original pick for the role was Aaliyah, another singer who (like Whitney) was lost before her time.

Cee Lo Green also joins the cast as Black, a character that wasn’t in the 1976 original. The lovable singer, of “Forget You” fame, has been incredibly busy lately as a judge on The Voice. He had to cancel a show in (and move to) Las Vegas recently, leaving his fans without the promised “sexified showgirls” and “mindtwisting magic.” Mike Epps from The Hangover also stars. Look for the movie on August 17.

Guitar Hero

Somewhere inside every adolescent young man, there is a guitar god lying in wait just under the surface.

Everyone has a favorite sing that they enjoy listening to, whether it’s Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” or Kiss’s “Rock and Roll All Night” that guitar god lies in wait to just play those chords that just seems to energize that inner being.

The Guitar Hero game series from publisher Activision and developers Neversoft, Harmonix, and Vicarius Visions, features a total of six “main games” and many game expansions including Guitar Hero Van Halen, Aerosmith and Metallica.

The main idea of the game is fairly simple. You (the game player) get to play some of the most recognizable song renditions either played by the bands themselves that made them famous, or play them as a game character within the game that you select and are able to customize by selecting clothing and add-ons such as different guitars and hairstyles and accessories.

And how do you get to play your favorite band’s songs? With a guitar of course! Over the course of the evolution of the series, there have been a few different custom guitars that were made available specifically for the game.

In the custom Aerosmith edition, there was a special guitar in with the package, and other specialized guitar replicas made specifically for the game and even decals to customize your guitar the way you’d like it to look.

The guitar is your controller for playing Guitar Hero, and the way you play the game is by pushing corresponding button controls on the guitar’s neck hat correspond with the same color chords that appear on your TV screen as you play along with your favorite song.

The game has special powerups that occur when you play a song correctly without missing a note. The longer you play the song without missing a chord, the more often you get to use powerups that help you score higher in the game.

Each edition had it’ own set of features, in the latest game in the series called Guitar Hero “Warriors of Rock,” there are 90 different music tracks featuring Kiss, Queen, Black Sabbath and other bands and a brand new quest mode designed for this edition.

If you have a guitar god trapped inside of you, then set him or her free by turning on your favorite game console, strapping on your guitar controller and hitting the power button, and set your inner guitar god free.

rawWho would have thought that something that came from not so humble beginnings would go onto become something that would become a cornerstone of Monday evenings on cable network USA.

Well for many of us around the world, WWE’s Monday Night Raw has reached a milestone that we’ve helped make happen, because it’s televised its 1000th consecutive episode this past Monday, and that says an awful lot about how far wrestling has come and what the viewing public will actually call entertainment.

I grew up watching wrestling and I’ve seen it grow from a simple 30 minute Saturday morning program to a wonder of modern marketing promotion, with larger than life heroes who we love to cheer for one week and boo and hiss at another week.

Over the years those heroes have changed of course as some wrestlers have gone onto lucrative careers in films, and others have just left the WWE (which incidently for many was called the WWF) and are now wrestling for other organizations.

Raw is the WWE’s premier wrestling program, and far outshines its sibling wrestling program Friday Night Smackdown on the SYFI network, mostly because that show is taped rather than an actual live event.

In celebration of Raw’s 1000th consecutive (episodic) episode there are many things happening on the program. At the beginning of the program is the reuniting of one of Raw’s most popular and outrageous team ups.

That’s right, retired WWE hall of famer Shawn “The Show Stopper” Michaels and Hunter Hurst Helmsley otherwise known as “Triple H” (or better known as Paul Levesque) return (probably for one night only) as DX.

Other wrestlers to appear on this eventful evening is Duane “The Rock” Johnson, Brock Lesner, and of all things the wedding of Daniel Bryan and AJ, but if you’re looking for a wrestling match you’ll get it when WWE fan favorite champion CM Punk wrestles for the title against challenger (and not just a WWE fan favorite, but the face of the WWE and one of its most popular wrestlers) John Cena.

The truth is that today’s wrestlers are much more hyped than they were back in the early days of wrestling, with a female manager who comes out with her protégé, screaming at the top of her lungs (with the help of a microphone of course) “Excuse Me,” much to the delight and boos of the crowd.

The names over the years have changed, as wrestlers including Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan, Brutus Beefcake and more have left and others such as The “Rattle Snake” Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Ultimate Warrior, Ray Mysterio and others have come to the ring to entertain us week after week, all leading to this momentous 1000th episode and as fans of the often times over the top entertainment extravaganza watch eagerly, we hope that we’re around to witness the 2000th episode of what’s become a part of Monday night prime time programming.
